School Marking Code - Raising the standards of Literacy

22/8/2014

The English Department will be implementing a new Whole-School Literacy Strategy in the coming year. An essential part of this will be the School Marking Code. Every pupil will be made aware of the new school marking code at the beginning of the school year.

Teachers will indicate inaccuracies or corrections that need to be made in ANY given subject. Pupils can then consult the code and identify which areas that they need to address in the next piece of written work. This will encourage pupils to take ownership of their work and empower them as they are able to take control of their own Literacy needs.

All pupils are greatly encouraged to seek help and further guidance from their class teacher.

Literacy focuses on developing each child’s ability to understand and use language as an
integral part of learning in all areas in order to interact effectively with the world around
them, to express themselves creatively and to communicate confidently (talking and
listening, reading and writing) using a variety of skills and media.

Language and Literacy are fundamental prerequisites for thinking, learning and interacting in personal, social and work contexts throughout life. Literacy is therefore a key to learning as well as a key to enjoyment and personal growth.
